Alterations and additions to a public/private house
This project in Gisborne, New Zealand, was in response to the client’s need to increase the public areas of their house, a meeting place for local community. The first proposal also included a small detached office and archive house for the client’s art criticism and publications.
The first proposal was for a heavy concrete block extension to the living room, the second a lighter weight semi-detached pavilion connected by a polycarbonate room which can be opened up on both sides for human and air movement.
Both proposals rework the side door creating a ‘new’ separate public entry; the second proposal further flips the entries, in response to public areas and movement, the existing front door becoming the private entry.
