Competition entry for the Hobart Waterfront International Design Competition

This project was a competition entry for the redevelopment of the civic waterfront of Hobart, Tasmania.
The brief called for ideas for as series or poorly used spaces in in the city, focusing on the reconnection of the waterfront to key civic spaces, cut off at present by six lanes of traffic, and car parks.
Our project joins these spaces physically and directly, creating a new infrastructural link through the town out onto the water.

A powerful line that joins the city and the cove- a common element that links a series of sites.
The line forms a bridge over busy roads, it defines an edge of Dunn Place, and lands near the City Hall. The line becomes a long pier, rising up and forming a lookout, descending at points to meet the water level. It attracts new programs – big and small, temporary and permanent. It is the fixed element that could underline future activity and development.
We also answered the need for new built space to be created, both through new buildings in strategic locations and

through the extension and revitalization of existing historic buildings.

The bridge element creates new and reactivated public spaces through increased pedestrian access to these built and open spaces.
Antarctica’s entry was placed in the top twenty-five and was exhibited in both Hobart and Melbourne.
We presented our entry alongside the winning entry at a Process event in March 2007 at Melbourne’s Loop Bar.
