This rural house and guest barn were developed from a design for planning by Michael Bell architect. The site was subject to multiple planning and geotechnical constraints which meant we were involved in a close collaboration with the engineers through the design development and documentation phases.
The main house is on two levels that cleave together without actually connecting internally. The upper wing is for living and eating, the lower for sleeping and washing. Treatment of both is quite different – the top level backs into the slope with masonry, but otherwise is well-glazed (double glazed with low-e glass) to take advantage of the broad sea views. The bedrooms are perched in a lightweight but well covered box, clad in vertical weatherboard, narrow slot windows glimpsing the bush beyond.
The complex has virtually no outside services other than power, so everything else has is dealt with on site.
The barn is currently in construction.
