The Caretaker’s House and office inserted three very low
cost levels of living and working space into the context of industrial South
Melbourne. It replaced a workers cottage and has been slowly evolving with the varied
neighbourhood of warehouses, office space and apartment high rise. It densely
works into a tiny site to the boundary on three sides, while squeezing a
courtyard garden, a roof garden and big skylit volumes into tight spaces. The
little footprint urban town house tries to be as variegated as its environment;
imagining a city yet to come which values close mixed uses and living over car parking.
