> ARCHIVE > CLARENDON CHILDCARE CENTRE , WURUNDJERI COUNTRY
ANTARCTICA are working with the City of Port Phillip on the renovation and extension to the existing heritage childcare centre. The project upgrades the existing facility, adding a second storey extension to increase the childcare places from 39 to 67.
The re-planning of the existing building allows for open perimeter circulation that connects the two wings of the building on the ground floor and celebrates the original 1923 heritage fabric.
The new second storey is conceived as a collection of pavilions that sits behind the parapet of the existing heritage facade. As the project is tightly constrained by heritage and planning controls, ANTARCTICA worked closely with the client and stakeholders during the concept phase to ensure the needs of the centre were prioritised within these limitations.
We are designing to exceed sustainable design expectations for the project by utilising natural ventilation, ample natural light for all habitable rooms and a building oriented to the north that shades the facades in the hotter months.
This project is currently in the Design Development phase.
