The Knox Interim Library project involved the design of a temporary library fitout to be constructed within the Knox Shopping Centre. During upgrades, the centre management had relocated the library to a new tenancy, however as a large community hub was soon to be constructed the council wanted the new fitout to form a temporary stop gap for this period.
The tenancy provided had a solid facade with poor access to natural light. Antarctica’s proposal was to reuse existing library furniture to organise the existing book collection around the edge of the space forming a perimeter wall with soft furnishings, emphasising an open spatial volume at the center. In contrast to the soft and protected perimeter, broken ceiling tiles are replaced with reflective alternatives and the existing concrete flooring is retained, demarcating a robust study area.
The spaces were designed to be flexible with a strong focus on multiple use and gathering zones.
